We have never been a free and egalitarian society for all. For much of our history freedom's promise only extended to white male cisgendered Protestants. Even then the prerogatives of monied elites often swayed our political economy. And yet our founders for all their faults had good instincts about freedom and the kind of political system needed to ensure it.
Different people at various times have worked through that system peacefully to expand the scope of freedom and equality to more people. These mass movements by blacks, women, the disabled, and LGBTQ people have made life better for people too long and too often denied. Moreover they have proven our system works.
Despite the great progress made we still have problems. There are all kinds of injustices and inequities that keep anyone who isn't white, male, straight, and cisgendered from fully realizing liberty and the happiness it brings.
Part of the Liberal challenge is to continue the work of securing that freedom and equality for all. Some will say its all about the economy and winning back the white working class. But thats only one part. We must not dismiss issues of race, gender, or LGBTQ Rights as unimportant or too divisive to confront. We must do both.
