The republican party realizes that with trump they're **** if he gets nominated too. His base will vote for him but nobody else will. Moderates and never trumpers will vote not trump. Again. Guaranteeing democrats another presidency and most likely losses in the house and senate.
If they by some miracle get a different candidate nominated there will be enough trump supporters with butt hurt that won't vote at all anymore because the system is "rigged". (Odd that it isn't only when trump wins) offsetting the moderate votes they gained back by not nominating trump.
