It makes no difference that it was a civil matter. They jury still had to base their verdict according to the laws of the jurisdiction. The difference between criminal and civil cases is that civil cases cannot include confinement. The jury in that case awarded exactly $0 for rape...because a jury cannot make an award when the find a defendant did not commit what the claimant accused them of doing.
