. . . America's THIRD-greatest general, Douglas MacArthur, was born. 

MacArthur was - far and away - the GREATEST commanding general of World War II, and was notable for his exceptionally-low casualty rate while conquering many thousands of square miles of enemy-held territories.

Under MacArthur's leadership Japan became a MODERN, decent member of the world community. 

You ask, of course, if MacArthur was the THIRD-greatest general, then who were the top two?  Anyone who made it as far as the sixth grade should know that answer:  Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.
