Being a father. As for a paid job...it was working at a bread factory in Boise, Idaho. Some long hours spent there but the worst was the unpredictable schedule. My standard shift was 12 pm to 830 pm. However, if there were any production delays/snafus, they were free to change the schedule at any time before 830 pm. Needless to say, this happened often. It was not uncommon to have the shift extend to 11 pm and then have the next day start at 5 am. Spent quite a few nights there.. pointless to drive home and try to get any sleep.
Besides that, it was notorious for being the low tech spot in the huge Interstate Brands network. As the Bread Sponge mixer operator, an average day involved 7 to 10,000 lbs per day of lifting. Flour, seeds, yeast, salt, preservatives, molasses, vinegar, and honey were mostly manually lifted and put into the machine.
