You are correct that most guns are purchased for self-defense. And gun crime per hundred thousand is actually down from the seventies.
Gun accidents are down from the bad old days, too.
What has changed is today guns are primarily regarded as deadly weapons for self defense.
In April 1968 when I got my long awaited Winchester Model 190 .22 semi auto self defense was the last thing it was made and marketed for.
I was ten, and had my own brand new Winchester rifle, made in New Haven Connecticut, USA!
