What happened is the population of the USA has reached herd immunity levels.
Either you were sane and sensible and got your shots, or MAGA and didn’t and got Covid (I’ve known MAGAS that claim five bouts of Covid, and Ivermectin cured it each time).
And either from shots or stubbornness, 96% or more of us have antibodies.
The honest tragedy was, that about twice as many Republicans died of Covid as Democrats and it was absolutely needless and because they feared shots more than Covid.

Our little county lost 42 boys in World War Two. They all have a photo on the wall in the courthouse.
We lost 54 Republicans to Covid, all of them old enough to know better.
A lot of them were my friends, who took the wrong way at life’s crossroads.
We all believed in science, personal responsibility, and public health back when we were kids.
Nobody was raised up MAGA.
It’s a bad choice.
