The statistics are pretty clear on the deficit.
Neither party will ever pay down the national debt.
Only one president ever ended his term in office with an actual surplus: Andrew Jackson, who did it by selling confiscated Indian property to slaveholders. There is no more land to sell.
Statistically, the Democrats have run up the deficit less than the Republicans, at least since the end of WWII, over 70 years ago. This is a FACT, you can look it up.
The Republicans of course are the ones that constantly complain about the country living beyond its means.
Most Americans prefer to get free stuff, especially the fatcats, who, for example, build real estate developments and force the government to pay for highways, streets, police schools and such, and claim that very expensive military weapons be built despite being obsolete, like pilot operated fighter aircraft.
Americans do not like dealing with economics or even hearing about economics. They enjoy being outraged when thy think that their taxes are paying for benefits to people they consider undeserving.
No one will ever pay off the deficit. It will continue to grow.
To oblige the people to pay off a debt is to force people to pay for something that produces no benefits for them (or anyone).
They will, as a result, pay interest on the debt, which is precisely paying for something that does not benefit them (or anyone).
