I think it also has as much to do with telling OTHERS that want to run to "stay out" since "We can hang your out to dry too". I think Trump and his lawyers are confident it won't go anywhere...but the main reason this prosecution exists is to try and damage Trump and no other reason.
What they AREN'T calculating is how many REPUBLICANS that they just massively energized along with the 77% of INDEPENDENTS they just made to vote for Trump in 2024. Political hit jobs RARELY work when you are using a GOVERNMENT AGENCY to do your dirty work.
