It might help to understand this. Hitler's lack of leadership in a geo-political sense was in many ways a benefit pre-1939. What I mean by that is he was very good at stirring up the sentiment in the German people. But his capabilities in a military and geo-political sense were almost infantile. All simulations our systems perform today on the contemporary situation in 1930's Germany indicate they had 0 chance of winning the war with US intervention. Less than 1 in 10 even if we remained completely neutral. More surprising is archived documents in possession of the German high command indicating their intelligence pretty closely agreed with our supercomputer models. So the NAZI's knew but chose to withhold this information due to the megalomania of Hitler. Instead they eventually began doing other things to subvert Hitler's increasing moronic demands.
This is why Hitler was able to make surprising gains early in the war. Because other countries assumed he was smart enough to see this. This gave them a sense of complacency and they were unprepared as a result. So it actually worked in the NAZI's favor initially and they actually benefited from appeasement. Churchill had studied Hitler and knew his psychological tendencies and was the only one to stand up and warn the world. He went so far as to be booted out of the government his decrees were so loud. It was deemed his language and insistence would serve to provoke. He was literally abandoned by EVERYONE and was touted as being so wrong as to warrant his ousting. Certainly one man couldn't be right in the face of 100's of intelligentsia saying the opposite. When Hitler proved Churchill not only sane but apparently the only one with any real understanding this catapulted him to power.
Once Hitler showed his hand though, no one underestimated his stupidity again. The Allies were caught unprepared and early gains seemed promising for the NAZI's. But Hitler's generals understood early on what was to come.
