Hitler used his cult of personality to appeal to Germany's patriotism. Small tribes in Africa who essentially practice a small form of Socialism (Hillary's "It takes a village") use a similar method of social standing for those who provide for the village to a larger extent.

Of course the issues with Hitler went well beyond his economics.  Any system which includes as one of it's tenets mass extermination is to be rejected.  All totalitarian systems are vulnerable to such excess of power.
