Dogs, cats, rabbits and mice will fair much better as they have a shorter lifespan and require a shorter time period to train their young to survive. Insects will fair even better.

Areas where the soil is rich in calcium and potassium will also do slightly better as the plants too prefer to absorb calcium and potassium and will be less radioactive as a result.

If you are interested, one of the more important things to understand is the distinction between radioactive material and radiation.  Think of every radioactive atom as a tiny light bulb that shines VERY brightly but only one time.  As each atom detonates it emits radiation.  The radiation (highly  concentrated packets of light) is what kills you.  You can protect yourself from this radiation with about 1 foot of water.  For example if you completely covered your shelter with containers of water 1 foot wide above below and on top and bottom the radiation from the atomic detonations OUTSIDE your shelter would be shielded.  HOWEVER, if you allow the radioactive dust to get INSIDE your shelter then when the atoms detonated INSIDE your shelter you wouldn't be protected.  So you also need a filter of some kind to keep the radioactive dust OUTSIDE while allowing oxygen in.  Good thing is, it doesn't take that much to filter out the dust.  An S-shaped tube stuffed with cotton with a fan to pull oxygen through is enough.  So lets say you dipped a 10,000 gallon tank into a pool of water.  All you would need is a pipe for air with some bends stuffed with filtering material and you'd be pretty good as long as you had food to last the first 3 to 6 months while the radiation levels are at their worst.  After you surface solar panels would be a big benefit as would Calcium and Sodium/Potassium.
