Yes I think you mean the Saudi families that were swiftly spirited out of the country. During our Middle East misadventures, Saudi Arabia allowed our air traffic while being more against terrorism than most Islamic countries. And since Saudi Arabia certainly hadn't been fingered at that time, it at least offered an excuse for our gov to move prominent Saudi families out before vigilantes got 'em - even just for being Muslims.
If we had folks in Saudi Arabia and a building got blown up with a few thousand Saudi casualties, and folks in the street were chanting that Christians were to blame, would we appreciate it if the Saudi Government helped our citizens get out of the country?
Saudis see terrorism (except domestic of course since they execute Christian converts, adulterers and homos) as working against their takeover. The Saudis are mostly in the long game, reasonably believing Islam will prevail by immigrating and populating. All Muslim sects inbreed quite prolifically.
I don't think there's much that's conclusive either way on the markets prior to 9-11, and after the incident is related to the event. After the event short sellers mainly got run down in a massive and rapid short-squeeze, I think it was day 3 when it was announced that it wasn't unpatriotic to short-sell stocks after all. Prior to that a one-sided market consisted of "patriotic" buyers jumping in and then having to jump out, steadily taking the market lower. While shorts orders could only be filled on upticks.
