There are heterodox apostates in all religions. Those that are attracted by the label but educated or in the spirit, that may even be clueless regarding their obligations. That's irrelevant.
The only way to judge a religion and it's responsibility for events is through the texts that adherents are expected to follow. Even back in Muhammad's day he spotted the same types that you cite and addressed them:
Surah 2.216 fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.
