I was a little confused on what you meant by weighted systems. From the best of my knowledge most of the developed world uses systems that aren't like the electoral college. I still think that America is rather unique in that system like the use of the imperial system and sports like basketball and American football which have fans overseas but are still more idiosyncratic in that they tend to be uniquely American and are seen as such.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.
