Because not stopping Putin now could lead to further problems for Europe and elsewhere. That's the theory right now I personally hold. I'm not really sure it's sound but that depends on how you look at the situation. Personally, I think its good to stop Putin now before he tries to create something of a Russian Empire by starting with Ukraine. Perhaps stopping Hitler early would have also prevented World War II. I guess you're flying with the idea that America wants to be an empire.
