I don't understand the whole 40 hr/5 day a week schedule. I guess I get it for some workplaces, but not for most. Why not just get your crap done, then leave? What purpose does it serve to stick around for no reason just because the clock said so?
That's why there is Chat GPT:
The concept of a 40-hour workweek can be traced back to labor movements and social reforms that took place during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was not the invention of a single individual but rather the result of collective efforts and evolving labor standards. Here are some key milestones and figures associated with the establishment of the 40-hour workweek:
- Labor Movements: Labor unions and workers' organizations played a significant role in advocating for shorter workweeks. In the United States, for example, unions like the American Federation of Labor (AFL) campaigned for reduced working hours as early as the late 19th century.
- Henry Ford: While not the originator of the 40-hour workweek, Henry Ford is often credited with popularizing it in the early 20th century. In 1926, Ford Motor Company became one of the first major corporations to adopt a 40-hour workweek and a five-day workweek for its employees, which set a precedent for other industries.
- Legislation: Government intervention and labor regulations also contributed to the establishment of the 40-hour workweek. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (commonly known as the FLSA) set the standard workweek at 40 hours and introduced regulations on minimum wage and overtime pay.
- International Context: Similar movements and regulations advocating for shorter workweeks took place in other countries around the same time. For example, France implemented a 40-hour workweek in the 1930s.
It's important to note that the specific history and development of the 40-hour workweek may vary by country and region, and it was the result of a complex interplay of labor activism, social and economic changes, and legislative actions rather than being attributed to a single individual.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.
