It's called deterrence. Israel is a nation about the size of Rhode Island in a swatch larger nations on its border. That's probably why they have to act this way. They fear a second Holocaust there with an overrun of the nation from their enemies. That's the Zionist view at least.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.
