This has been a little covered story but during the APEC summit in San Francisco, the election situation in Taiwan changed its calculus. Apparently there has been a three way race for the January 13th election. One party supporting independence and two supporting closer ties. Now the two opposition parties decided to become one ticket. This means that the Taiwan headache for the Americans might be on the road to being less tense. I'm pretty sure anyone who saw the shocked face of Biden and Blinken now know why this was the reaction. Link to article here.
