Where the North messed up was not coming up with a plan on what to do with the freed slaves. They should have been placed on boats and moved back to Africa....along with some Indians who could serve as "spirit guides" for them.
Well there was the state of Liberia that was supposed to be an African slaves that wanted to return to Africa after slavery ended. They even named the capital Monrovia after President Monroe. The nation still exists today.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.
