A merger would mean people lose jobs. Not the best thing. A government run store would look out for the employees.

I think the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few people is Communism. Just like Index Funds. Capitalism is about competition and the invisible hand. Putting everything in the hands of the super elite is the same problem as the government running the show. While the government probably would mess it up even further the same principle applies.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.
