I'm somewhat familiar with them. I replaced the AC system on a Dodge Daytona. Used aftermarket lines that didn't quite fit the compressor, so I had to grind it down enough to get it to fit. PITA, but I got it to work - held a vacuum when I took it to a guy (I didn't have the equipment for this) to draw it down and then put R12 in it. AC lines are preshaped and will run the way they do.
The other possibility is that for some unfathomable reason they had one made like that.
