I don't own an AR 15 style rifle.
I hate paying for cosmetics..I'm all about internal  functionality and reliability.
If I can get hooked up with a reliable AR style rifle in the sub $1000 price range...I don't care if surface rust shows up on some non critical parts.
Once I'm zero'd in for a 100 yard and under shot...the rifle would get very little use afterwards.

It's been a couple of years since I assembled an AR.  But, the last one I did was priced out as follows:

• Barreled upper receiver - 250 (included good quality stainless steel barrel and nice slim, free-float rail system)
• Bolt carrier group - 120 (better than average quality)
• Lower receiver - $100 (paid extra for nice billet lower)
• Stock + Buffer Tube -  $75 (premium stock)
• CMMG lower parts kit - $70

Total for the AR = $610.  You should still be able to assemble a really GOOD QUALITY AR for about that price. When I say "good quality", I mean significantly better than the a $450 S&W AR.  And, that way you get exactly what you want.  For me, I already had an extra CMMG parts kit, stock and buffer tube assembly lying around, so I saved about $150 in that build. 
 
What cheaper rifles do I even have?  I suppose my Savage 30-06, my Remington 788 .223.
