Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is a popular program where drag queens read stories to children in schools, libraries, and bookstores. The events are usually geared toward children aged 3–11, and are often attended by children with their families, parents, and teachers.
DQSH events aim to promote reading and diversity, and to provide children with positive messages about gender expression. Some of the benefits of DQSH include:
  • Positive role models
DQSH provides children with glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models.
  • Themes of acceptance
DQSH often features books that promote themes of acceptance, diversity, and self-expression.
  • Creative activities
DQSH hosts often engage in other learning activities, such as playing games, making crafts, or posing for photographs.
DQSH was started in 2015 by author and activist Michelle Tea in San Francisco.
