You are aware, are you not, that one of the main missions of the Capitol Police is to maintain and preserve a safe working environment for the members of Congress. Protecting them from an angry mob that was intent on physically disrupting the legislative process and lynching the Vice President certainly falls within the scope of that mission.
Members of Congress were on the other side of the door that Officer Byrd was guarding. Do you really expect that the mob would NOT have pushed through his position and reached the members of Congress on the other side of the door had he not stopped the first one through the breach, or do you think that, after ignoring his demands to cease and desist from breaking through the barrier, they would have instantaneously regained their sense of civic duty and obediently stopped in their tracks once on the other side if he ordered them to?
