Caesar was in the First Triumvirate. He was going broke but the public liked him. Crassus and Pompeii wanted Caesar out of Rome. They allowed him to raise legions and go to Gaul to put down the native tribes. Caesar saw this as an opportunity to enrich himself again. Caesar enriched his legions and went all the way to Germany. Julius did some heavy duty on the many tribes in Gaul.
