Self-deprecating humor is considered the funniest kind, as it leaves the listener with no one to defend. As such, the laugh or chuckle or guffaw, as the case may be, is entirely unhindered in cascading forth by any regret or ethical concern for the butt of the joke. Most of the best comics make themselves - not others - the butt of their jokes.
But in order for the funny to really happen, the intended recipient needs to have enough snap to get the joke, If he does not, then it has to be spelled out - as it was, in this case - and then, some of the punch is taken off the joke.
In the rare case that a fellow is too dense to get the joke even after it is spelled out for him, then pretty much ALL of the funny is murdered. In such cases, where one expected a laugh, one is rewarded with only a derp.
He who laughs last probably had to have the joke explained to him. And then, his laugh sounds more like, "derp."
