When someone says "This country is not a democracy, it is a republic", what they really mean is that they favor an oligarchy that does what they want done, regardless of the desires or the needs of the average American. Their knowledge of politics and political science is quite scanty.
Take this topic: Individuality can be a good thing or a bad thing.
The same is true for collectivism.
Which is better depends entirely on the circumstances.
"Too many cooks spoil the broth", suggests that cooking is more individualistic.
"Rome was not built in a day", suggests that great cities are the product of collectivism over a long period of time.
Complete individualism would require us to use exclusively mini-fridges and sofas made of wicker or of the beanbag type.
And morality is not really an issue when it comes to refrigerators and sofas.
