In his "march to the sea" and in the 1862 Shenandoah campaign the generals took it upon themselves, not via orders from Lincoln, to destroy personal property. Farms and homesteads were laid to waste; people who lived there came close to starvation as a result, but those orders did not come from Lincoln and they did not include the rape and murder of women or deliberate physical harm of any kind to civilians.
