In ongoing developments on Wednesday, reports indicate continued airstrikes in Gaza and "intense ground battles" between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters in central refugee camps, resulting in numerous casualties.
On Tuesday, airstrikes and missiles targeted residential and public buildings, including Al-Amal hospital in Khan Younis, where five people, including a five-day-old baby, were reportedly killed.
Expressing outrage at the attacks, Gemma Connell, a team leader from the UN aid coordination office OCHA, emphasized in a video that "no child in the world should be killed, let alone one sheltering under the emblem of a humanitarian organization."
Connell noted that the hospital, clearly marked with the Palestinian Red Crescent logo, housed around 14,000 people, condemning the shelling as a violation of international humanitarian law. UN health agency chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus deplored the strikes, describing them as "unconscionable" and urging an immediate ceasefire.
As international calls for a halt to hostilities persist, Tedros highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, with the health system already strained, hindering efforts to save lives. The Al-Amal hospital, a supposed safe space, suffered extensive damage in the attacks.
The UN aid coordination office OCHA's latest update outlined heavy Israeli bombardment across Gaza on Tuesday, with ongoing clashes on the ground and continued rocket fire into Israel by Palestinian armed forces.
Reports also indicated clashes in the southern town of Khan Younis and heavy strikes in Gaza city. Palestinians, following Israeli orders to relocate from northern Gaza, faced multiple fatalities in the newly designated areas.
The humanitarian update from OCHA reported 207 Palestinians killed and 338 injured from January 1 to January 2. Since October 7, the conflict has claimed at least 22,185 Palestinian lives in Gaza, with about 70% believed to be women and children. Up to 7,000 people are missing, presumed buried under rubble.
The Israeli military reported 171 soldiers killed and 983 injured since the start of the ground operation in Gaza. The rising death toll and humanitarian crisis underscore the urgent need for a resolution and the protection of civilians and healthcare facilities.
