Might not even be the $$$. If you're into Christian theology there are theories of demonic possession and what happens to souls that have lost "the light" upon death. One of the tells of the modern era as FOS pointed out countless times (and I brought it up even before FOS arrived) is the obsession with $$$ above all else. The insatiable greed seems more like a symptom than cause.
