The parallel thinking you mentioned is a very real and not infrequent occurrence.
At the same time, mining for ideas from a public forum isn't plagiarism in it's worst form.
So, I believe that it may have happened as you suspect. It's plausible.
That show, after all, will put the stupidest crap on...
A current event topic would be getting kicked around on the forum one day, and a day or so later Rush would be almost quoting some of the stuff that was being said on the forum verbatim on his show.
