You have no idea when a natural disaster my strike.
Say, you have a very bad winter storm, you're out of food, can't go the the grocery store and if you could, thousands of others have already depleted the shelves...you're screwed because you didn't have a stash of food......same situation of not have enough oil to power the nation.
It's also like putting money back for a rainy day...if you can comprehend that.
