A couple of points here.
First, the gun industry has made it next to impossible to do a mental health background check. Every time there is a mass shooting, we find out the shooter was nuts and everyone in his life knew he was nuts. A simple talk to his family, friends, or coworkers would have indicated that.
Second, Republicans have been slashing funds to drug treatment programs and mental health care for years. Rich people's dressage horses aren't going to buy themselves. So when you make it hard to get mental health care and easy to get guns, are you really surprised mass shootings happen? You shouldn't be.
do you want the enemy to judge whether you're fit and able? hell no.
according to most Demonrats, if you own a gun, you're mentally ill.
now, do you suppose most psychologist are Demonrat or Republican?
The laws that have been proposed and instituted takes a neighbor/acquaintance/relative to say you're dangerous, and there goes your rights.
Most of the time, you're screwed with no recourse.
