That's not a cop out, that's internet etiquette going back to the 90s and the days of Usenet.
Are there exceptions? Sure, quoting the National Tattler, for example, or some egregious tabloid. The GatewayPundit is notoriously on par with tabloids.
But, short of that, debate the argument, and not the one making it.
