In only a few years historians will probably deny anybody could have believed anything else. Not only was there his birth certificate, there were two Honolulu newspapers announcing his birth, and most of his classmates in high school are still living.
And yes it matters.
Being mistaken is forgivable.
But to be a damned fool on purpose, when anyone should know better, is the best indicator of future error.
Nobody would have even dreamt up such a fairy tale if both his parents had been white.
