Alva was born in 1905. His father was an alcoholic and he never talked at all about his mother to me.

Over a half a century had passed and my Great Grandmother had slept in Plum Grove since she died of the 1918 flu. Alva would cry like a baby, making sure I knew how she took in the stranger, healed the sick, and took in a poor neighborhood boy and put him in charge of all her horses.
One of Alva’s jobs every morning was to round up the hoboes sleeping in the big red barn and take them to her so they’d be fed, and clothed, and paid for their labor.
