True story time
The spring of 1975 our science teacher developed lung cancer from too many cigarettes and the school board hired a substitute who drove a station wagon with right wing bumper stickers all over it (rare then, common today) and one sticks today in my memory:

The substitute was named Mr Pennington. He would teach scientific racism to our science class and one day he started in on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

I’m ashamed of myself. My girlfriend Betty stood up that day and said
I’m here to learn science not your racist, anti Semitic, anti female lies and propaganda!
And she looked right at me and said
YOU ARE A COWARD TO LET HIM DO THIS BECAUSE YOU KNOW BETTER!
YOU TAUGHT ME HE IS LYING!
HOW CAN YOU SIT THERE AND NOT SPEAK UP
And Betty started crying, and she was right.
Sometimes a Christian believes in a school teacher’s freedom to teach more than he does right from
wrong.
With that I went downstairs to Mrs, Phillips the Principal who had been my mother’s roommate in college with the mimeographed materials he gave the class, and that afternoon I watched Mr Pennington drive that station wagon away, and there was blue smoke from that old clunker that sort of left a fog on the street.
Mrs Phillips taught us until school ended.
At 17 I learned never to stand silent around hate speech.
Your girlfriend will not stand for it.
