Pence shares role of Catholic upbringing, says Catholics have an ally in Trump

WASHINGTON — Vice President Pence may no longer practice the Catholic faith he grew up with, but he told those attending the annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday that his Catholic upbringing helped shape him and "continues to serve me."
“This honestly feels like coming home to me,” the former altar boy said to a hotel ballroom filled with more than 1,000 Catholics. “My Catholic faith poured an eternal foundation in my life.”
Pence, raised in a devout Catholic household in Columbus, Ind., called the church’s hymns and liturgies the anthems of his youth.
Although his official biography describes Pence as growing up in a large Catholic family, Pence said he was recently informed by Notre Dame president Father John I. Jenkins, that the six Pence children qualified only as a midsized Catholic family.
But Pence and his three brothers were numerous enough for Father Patrick Gleason to know where to call when he needed a full team of altar boys at the last minute.
Pence was also a parish youth minister and attended parochial school where at least one of his teachers hoped he’d become a priest.
