I wasn’t the hood. It was a working class white neighborhood. Our hosts were the only black people in sight.
Some white guy next door with no shirt on looked at us, and slammed the door on his truck and drove off hard.
Another sunburned, hard looking white women watched a couple of kids splash in a wading pool, and kept staring at us.
I realized then, why she didn’t want white visitors, especially not beautiful white women like my mother was.
They weren’t supposed to be there, and we weren’t supposed to mix with them.
