Let's start with the Christians: An ultimately beneficent old man in the sky did it, and he's managing it ongoingly. He's KINDA like Santy, in that he keeps a list of who's naughty and nice - but he's KINDA like a stepdad on a bender in the way he deals with the naughty.
So, that's the Christian creation story. Let's see what science has to offer.
