It's like situational ethics (which any good hit man will readily admit to).
The chattering class in Russia rails against Putin every winter for allowing heat, gas, electricity, running water - all the things that Russia can easily prevent the ukrainian civilians from having.
This winter, they will not rail. This winter, they will approve - golf-clap, even.
Because this winter, the situation is different and Putin's ethics have been leaned on and abused enough.
