"Although the total estimated number of transgender people was small — around 1.6 million people 13 and up, or about 0.6 percent of the population — trans identification in recent years has become political dynamite, driven in part by the rise in minors seeking medical treatments. Republican legislators across the country have sought to prohibit such care by criminalizing doctors or investigating parents for abuse, which professional medical groups have condemned."

Up from 0.06% just ten years ago. There is a social contagion element that cannot be overlooked.
It's not social contagion.
You can't catch transgenderism like a cold.
The reason more young people are coming out as transgender is because it's more accepted now.
At least it was until Republicans decided to demonize it to use for their own political agenda.
Instead of dealing with the real problems this country faces, they are scaring the begeezus out of parents who believe that their children are being 'groomed' to want to change their gender, and that some mad doctor is going to whack off their body parts.
In years past many transgender people were afraid to come out because they were demonized.
Republicans are now trying to roll back the clock on progress once again.
Social progress is especially scary for them.
They would prefer to live in the 1950's.
