I think the latter is true. They know he's lying and don't care. They have no morals or principles when it comes down to it. The other day President Obama got testy with a crowd of Hillary Clinton supporters in eastern North Carolina when they began shouting at a man in the audience holding a Donald Trump sign.
Trump completely turned the story around accusing Obama of “screaming” at the protester and said that the whole scene was a “disgrace.”
So what's up with his followers?
Do they not know that he's lying to them, or do they know he's lying and just don't care?

He says what they want to hear when it comes to immigrants, Muslims, Hillary, liberals, women. He legitimizes the ugliness of their humanity which is preferable to them becoming decent people.
