What they actually believed was that the time was not right to announce support for gay marriage, and they were probably right to assume this. It took several years before the public opinion changed, and much of the change was caused by old-fashioned gay haters dying off and a new generation of people realizing that there was no threat to them or society of Adam married Steve.
