It's hard to be interested in posting new material to a site that goes down so much. I think some site owners believe that their website is a one-way street - they are providing a site for people to express their views without charge (just asking for donations). What they should be focusing on, rather than hitting everyone up for money, donations, etc, is enticing people who write interesting content to post on their sites. Good, original content is the lifeblood of these forums.
As for ads, that's what it's all about, monetizing what you've created. You can either have ads or you can rely on donations. Or, you are just rich and don't care about generating revenue, which is ok too.
