I never followed spring training much, but it was always nice to listen to a few March games. The breaking temps and spring really got you pumped up.
I think some teams actually had spring training in Cali. If so, then it was good logistics to have everyone in and around Phoenix. You want to minimize travel with pre-season.
One of the Sports Bars I was a Partner in did some promotions with the Stadium they played at in the 90s before it was torn down in 2002....
The Players would come in all the time after the games or their off day..... There were a couple that were banging some waitresses of ours...
For the most part, they were really a good bunch --- spent money --- kind to the staff etc... The Pitcher Greg Maddux was hilarious..
The only Player that was really disliked was a big Mocha Negro called Dave Justice... He was the classic example of "you can take the Boy out of the Jungle, but can't take the Jungle out of the Boy"... He was very demanding, degrading, absolutely classless & rude, real ghetto.. I specifically recall on one occasion he came in with a small group of male friends in the afternoon... They were there for hours, drinking, playing pool, eating, snapping fingers and barking at their Server Brenda.... When they were finished, they rang up a tab over $700, which Dave paid and left Brenda a $4 Tip.... My Partners and I took $200 out the register to giver her....
