My dad was flying a P-51 after the war with the ANG one afternoon over Alameda when one of the landing gear legs refused to lower down into the locked position. He had to raise the other leg and belly land the plane in the grass off to the side of the runway at 100plus mph and that was the last time he ever flew.
84 war time missions with no mech failures and that is why he decided that his luck had run out...Dad also liked to talk about "THE LAW OF AVERAGES"...no question why.
