Personally I think both can work in tandem.
Your "pillow and 2 x 4" example was good for laughs...but it falls way short of proving that a more substantial pair of bumpers can't work in tandem with the formed sheetmetal "crumple zone" structure.
The MFGers leave the more substantial bumpers out bc the lenient safety requirements for low speed damage control allow them to.
I want to see you furnish actual test results that prove your point and no more ridiculously hair brained *** pulls from you.
This is why tens of millions have been spent on engineers to engineer these crumple zones with maximum passenger safety in mind.
Trucks have completely different dynamics. So do dragsters.
