TLDR: if this was actually important, why did Kenji Yamamoto, M.D., have to pay someone thousands of dollars to publish his letter to the editor?

Kenji Yamamoto, M.D., from the Center of Varicose Veins from the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Okamura Memorial Hospital in Japan took time out of his day from dealing with elderly ladies varicose veins to write a letter the the editor of Virology Journal (via BioMedCentral which is part of Springer Nature) at a cost to him of £2090.00/$2890.00/€2390.00 plus VAT or local taxes where applicable.

Open access publishing is not without costs. Virology Journal therefore levies an article-processing charge of £2090.00/$2890.00/€2390.00 for each article accepted for publication, plus VAT or local taxes where applicable.

The most important Springer Nature peer-review question is "did the check clear?"
